Pizza Pot Pie, A Unique Twist on Your Regular Pizza

meatball pizza pot pie

If you do not live around Chicago, you may never hear of this pizza pot pie, a striking pizza dish with its upside-down serving. The gooey mozzarella on top and the crispy crust on the bottom come from the baked dough and the filling inside. It is a little more challenging to serve than a classic deep-dish pizza or your regular pizza. Try this pizza pot pie recipe at home and enjoy the delicacy of a pizza by flipping over the crust with a hot bowl.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 cup of carrot, shredded
  • 6 ounces of minced meat
  • 14 ounces of tomato sauce (buy here)
  • 14 ounces of pizza dough, thawed
  • 1 ounce of butter
  • 7 ounces of low-moisture mozzarella slices (buy here)
  • 16 mushroom halves
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon of milk

Equipment

  • Rolling pin (buy here)
  • Brush
  • Ramekin
  • Serving plate

Instructions

  1. Sauté the onion with vegetable oil, then add the shredded carrots and cook for 1-2 minutes
  2. Add the minced meat and cook until seared and the color changes
  3. Add the tomato sauce, stir, and cook for another minute. We will use this mixture as the pot pie pizza filling later
  4. Preheat the oven to 360°F
  5. Choose a flat surface for rolling your dough. Spread it with the flour first
  6. Make sure you flour the dough and the rolling pin before you use them
  7. Place the dough on the surface and divide it into 4 pieces. These will be the bowls for your pizza pot pie
  8. Roll out each piece into a circle a few inches larger than the ramekin rim
  9. Grease ramekins with butter. Line the bottom and edges with the mozzarella slices, then add 3-4 mushroom halves and the filling into each
  10. Top with the dough sheets and gently press the overhanging edges to the outer rims with your hands
  11. Beat the egg with milk and brush the top of your pizza pot pies with it
  12. Bake in the oven for 25 minutes or until the crusts are golden brown and remove from the oven
  13. Flip them over onto plates with a pot holder and serve
